An aspiring Speech Pathologist, UVA third-year Maggie Barilka has a deep affection for children.
“Nothing is greater than a child lighting up when they see you come into the room each and every week,” she says.
Maggie joined Madison House as a first-year and discovered that the Youth Mentoring program provided her with unique opportunities to work with children of all ages.
“As much as I adore UVA,” she says, “it can be hard to connect with the community outside Grounds without stepping off campus.” Through volunteering, Maggie made connections with students and faculty at the local elementary schools and Boys and Girls clubs and became part of a community outside of University Grounds. “By getting involved with Madison House, I have met an incredible community of people both within the House and in the community,” she says.

Always looking for ways to get involved, Maggie also found opportunities to become a leader within the very programs she was serving.
“There was a dance program that ran right before my shift,” she recalls. “I’ve been a dancer and performer all my life, and I asked if I could be an assistant in the program. The staff agreed, and I got to share something I love with the kids and watch their love of dance grow. They even competed in a competition at the end of the year!”
In 2018, Maggie served as a Community Engagement intern at Madison House and worked with staff in supporting our 26 student-led programs while also volunteering as the Program Director for the Boys and Girls Club of Charlottesville. Throughout that time, Maggie prioritized the empowerment of students to become engaged with their community and organized a series of community partner roundtables.
